Biografia
Giorgia Di Marcantonio è ricercatrice di Archivistica, bibliografia e biblioteconomia (SSD M-STO/08) presso l'Università di Macerata. I principali ambiti di ricerca si orientano al rapporto tra risorse documentarie e ICT, con particolare riferimento agli standard internazionali e ai modelli di restituzione delle informazioni. Membro del comitato scientifico per l' Italian Journal of Library, Archives and Information Science (JLIS.it), ha pubblicato molti articoli in riviste scientifiche di settore. Dal 2021 è membro del progetto internazionale InterPARES Trust AI (2021-2026) che, tra i molti obiettivi, intende definire rischi e benefici dell’utilizzo dell’intelligenza artificiale nei processi documentali.

Le ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) stanno trasformando i metodi utilizzati dalle Library and Information Science per organizzare e diffondere la conoscenza. Questo cambiamento è evidente nell'adozione di nuovi standard descrittivi (RDA/RIC-CM) e in numerosi progetti di ricerca (come INTERPARES TRUST AI) che cercano di valutare e gestire l'impatto delle tecnologie, in particolare dell'Intelligenza Artificiale, sull'archivistica e sulla biblioteconomia in un quadro globale. Il contributo offre spunti sul futuro della descrizione e della catalogazione della conoscenza, sottolineando il miglioramento dell'accesso alle risorse informative consentito dall'uso di LLM e RAG in ambienti digitali progettati per la ricerca del patrimonio culturale.

Giorgia Di Marcantonio is a researcher in Archival and Library Science, (SSD M-STO/08) at the University of Macerata. Her main research areas explore the relationship between archives and ICTs, with a special focus on international standards and models for information retrieval. She is a member of the scientific committee for the Italian Journal of Library, Archives and Information Science (JLIS.it) and has published numerous articles in sector-specific scientific journals. Recently, she has been involved with the international project InterPARES Trust AI (2021-2026), which aims to delineate the risks and benefits associated with the use of artificial intelligence in record management.
Abstract
Artificial intelligence, LLM and RAG to support Library and Information science. Opportunities and limits
ICTs are transforming the methods Library and Information Science uses to organize and disseminate knowledge. This transformation is evident in the adoption of new descriptive standards (RDA/RIC-CM) and numerous research projects (such as INTERPARES TRUST AI) that seek to assess and manage the impact of technologies, especially artificial intelligence, on archival science and librarianship within a global framework. The contribution offers insights into the future of knowledge description and cataloging, emphasizing the enhanced access to informational resources enabled by the use of LLM and RAG in digital environments designed for exploring cultural heritage.
